INTERVIEWING ENRIQUE GUERRERO SALOM, A MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN PARLAMENT

ENRIQUE GUERRERO SALOM

1.What is your role in the European parlament?
-The role of a Member of the European Parliament (EP) is multiple so it's hard to pin it down to a single frame. My role in PE is basically legislation: by, participation in the working committees of the EP, the vote in plenary sessions, committees and delegations, drafting amendments, the defending party ideas represent, etc. However, this activity goes beyond that. I also have representative functions: I represent the Socialist Group as Vice President. And Informative: by participating in events and conferences.

2.How many members are in the European parliament?
-The Lisbon Treaty sets the amount of MP in 751 (750 Members + 1 the President)

3. How does the Council of the European Union interact, the commission of the European Union and the European Parliament?
-The interaction is varied and it is difficult to answer this question due to the generality thereof. However, interaction falls mainly in the regular legislative process. The European Commission (EC) made the legislative proposal (the future law) and transmits both the Council and the EP. Both components traded in their working groups: the Council members negotiate while the PE traded Members elect States. That negotiation positions on the document transmitted by the EC adopted. Once the institutions have defined their positions, CE, EP and Council meet to try to reach a common document and pass legislation.
The interaction is generally good. Sufficed to say that in most cases the agreement is achieved on first reading.

4. How long have you been in this position?
-As as legislature, 5 years (2009-2014)

5.What are the main objectives of the European parliament?
-The EP aims to assert the voice of the citizens who voted

6. There have been profound changes in recent legislation?
-The last major change was the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty in 2008. Recently, one can observe changes in the approved draft reforms of the economic framework to address the crisis.

7. Has it affected the operation resignation of Vice President of the European Parliament? Which Vice President?
-Are you refering to the resignation of Alejo Vidal PP? If so, no. It has not affected it.

8. Do you think there are too many members in the European Parliament?
-I don´t think so. The PE has many members due to multiple nationality and extensive territory it occupies its representation. Another thing is to talk about the number of Commissioners. That itself should reduce it.
